How can a blood test tell if it's a boy or a girl?
While you're pregnant, tiny pieces of your baby's DNA float in your blood. Scientists call this cell-free fetal DNA. By 7 weeks there is usually enough of it to test. Girls have two X chromosomes; boys have an X and a Y. Your own blood has no Y. So our lab looks for the Y chromosome in your sample. If we find it, you're having a boy. If we don't, you're having a girl.
How we protect your result
Because any Y chromosome reads as a boy signal, we ask you to wash your hands and keep men and boys out of the room while you collect. That way the only DNA in the vial is yours and your baby's. EarlyReveal is a screening test for your baby's sex, not a diagnostic test, and it doesn't replace your prenatal care.
Your blood: X chromosomes only
Pregnant with a girl: still no Y
Pregnant with a boy: baby's Y shows up in your blood
How does EarlyReveal compare with NIPT, ultrasound and predictor kits?
There are a few ways to find out in Canada. Here's what each one measures, when it can tell you, and what it costs.
| Feature | EarlyReveal at-home DNA test | NIPT through a clinic | Anatomy ultrasound | Predictor kits & old wives' tales |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How early | 7 weeks | 10 weeks | 18–20 weeks | Any time |
| Where | At home, or at a partner clinic | Clinic blood draw, usually with a requisition | Hospital or imaging clinic | Anywhere |
| What it looks at | Your baby's DNA in your blood (Y chromosome) | Your baby's DNA in your blood; built to screen for chromosomal conditions, with sex as an optional report | Your baby's anatomy on screen | Urine chemistry or folklore. Nothing that measures your baby's sex |
| Accuracy for sex | 99% from 7 weeks* | High when the lab reports sex | Depends on baby's position; sometimes not visible | No evidence it beats a coin flip |
| Typical cost in Canada | $169.95 | Often $400–$800 privately; funded in some provinces for higher-risk pregnancies | Covered by provincial health insurance | $0–$40 |
| Wait for the answer | Tested within one business day of reaching our lab | Usually 1–2 weeks | Until your scan date | Instant, and unreliable |

Both DNA blood tests look for the same signal. What changes is when you can test, where you go, and what else the test is designed to find. EarlyReveal also offers NIPT from 10 weeks through partner clinics.
Confirmed at the scan. Loved by Canadian families.
“Results in under 12 hours, and correct”
The Canada Post strike affected shipping and they handled it perfectly, sending a new kit and a FedEx return label. My results were available less than 12 hours after they received my sample, and we confirmed a baby boy at our 20-week anatomy scan.
“This test saved my gender reveal party!”
My genetic blood test came back without a gender a week before our reveal party. I'm in healthcare, so I set up a collection space without male contamination. Came back female, and it's been confirmed with ultrasound. This test saved my gender reveal party!
“Literally zero pain”
Seriously, it was so easy and painless, I was shocked. I really wanted the Tap collection in my arm rather than the finger prick option. Literally zero pain!
“The test and the ultrasound both confirmed a boy”
Every day of waiting for that first ultrasound to see if we were having a boy or a girl felt like an ETERNITY. When I found EarlyReveal on IG, I just knew I had to have it. The test and ultrasound both confirmed a baby boy!
“We tested and discovered our baby's gender!”
The process was safe, quick, basically pain-free and super easy. Thank you EarlyReveal for letting us have this beautiful experience. If you're expecting, you have to give EarlyReveal a shot!
