How can a blood test tell if it's a boy or a girl?

While you're pregnant, tiny pieces of your baby's DNA float in your blood. Scientists call this cell-free fetal DNA. By 7 weeks there is usually enough of it to test. Girls have two X chromosomes; boys have an X and a Y. Your own blood has no Y. So our lab looks for the Y chromosome in your sample. If we find it, you're having a boy. If we don't, you're having a girl.

How we protect your result

Because any Y chromosome reads as a boy signal, we ask you to wash your hands and keep men and boys out of the room while you collect. That way the only DNA in the vial is yours and your baby's. EarlyReveal is a screening test for your baby's sex, not a diagnostic test, and it doesn't replace your prenatal care.

Your blood: X chromosomes only

Pregnant with a girl: still no Y

Pregnant with a boy: baby's Y shows up in your blood

Both DNA blood tests look for the same signal. What changes is when you can test, where you go, and what else the test is designed to find. EarlyReveal also offers NIPT from 10 weeks through partner clinics.

“Results in under 12 hours, and correct”

The Canada Post strike affected shipping and they handled it perfectly, sending a new kit and a FedEx return label. My results were available less than 12 hours after they received my sample, and we confirmed a baby boy at our 20-week anatomy scan.

“This test saved my gender reveal party!”

My genetic blood test came back without a gender a week before our reveal party. I'm in healthcare, so I set up a collection space without male contamination. Came back female, and it's been confirmed with ultrasound. This test saved my gender reveal party!

“Literally zero pain”

Seriously, it was so easy and painless, I was shocked. I really wanted the Tap collection in my arm rather than the finger prick option. Literally zero pain!

Before you order: five questions parents ask

Is it safe for my baby?

Yes. It's a small blood sample from you, so it poses no risk to your baby. It's a screening test, not a diagnostic test, and it doesn't replace your prenatal care.

Can the result be wrong?

Rarely. In our clinical study of 633 pregnancies, results were 99% accurate overall, with girl results slightly more certain than boy results. The two things that can throw a result are collecting before 7 weeks and male DNA getting into the sample, which is why the collection steps matter. If we're wrong, you get a full refund.

I had a miscarriage recently, or my last baby was a boy. Does that matter?

No. Your baby's DNA clears from your blood within days of a birth or a loss, so a previous pregnancy doesn't affect this result.

Why 7 weeks, and not 6 like some tests?

Most pregnancies don't have enough of the baby's DNA in the blood before 7 weeks. Waiting the extra week means fewer inconclusive results, so you're more likely to get a clear answer the first time.

What if I'm expecting twins, or had IVF?

Twins: a boy result means at least one boy; a girl result means girls only. IVF: count your weeks from your transfer date, and use our date checker if you're not sure.

Your baby is ready to say hello. Are you?
